Workshop Outline

Understanding Knowledge Management, Tacit Knowledge, Explicit Knowledge, and KMBOK

Participants shall be taught about the definition of knowledge and the difference between tacit and explicit knowledge. The history and meaning behind knowledge management shall also be addressed.

Business Uses for Knowledge Management

This session will involve participants being taught how they can use knowledge management to improve business productivity by reducing costs and increasing sales.

The Knowledge Management Mix

In this session, participants will be educated on the three vital elements of knowledge management: people, process, and technology.

The Knowledge Management Framework

The objective of this session is to educate participants about what steps they need to use to build upon their knowledge management framework, including how to perform a needs analysis, resource identification, process analysis, identification, and construction, along with how to accumulate, share and store knowledge.

ITandD's Conundrum

The second day of this course will commence with participants reviewing their pre-assignments.

The Four Knowledge Management Models

This part of the workshop will commence with covering the four most commonly used knowledge management models:

  • Botha's Process Model

  • Bukowitz and Williams' knowledge management process framework

  • Nonaka and Takeuchi's Knowledge Spiral Model

  • Gamble and Blackwell's knowledge management matrix

Knowledge Management Toolkit

This session will involve participants being educated on the various tools they can use for their knowledge management work, including cross-functional teams, organizational culture, IT solutions, and mentoring. Some of the additional content covered will include practice databases: content and document management systems, help desks, and discussion boards.

How to Implement Knowledge Management Initiatives

The objective of this session is to teach participants how knowledge networks are built and how they can create Knowledge Management Body of Knowledge (KMBOK) as well as Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) positions. Implementation techniques will also be considered, such as post mortems, evaluation measures and pilot programs, and change management strategies.
